Rasmus Ristolainen could fit Andrew Campbell's Senators, but Ottawa's refusal to move a centre is blocking the cleanest trade path.
Daily Faceoff's Anthony DiMarco reports that Ottawa and Philadelphia have discussed possible deals, with the Senators maintaining interest in the right-shot defenceman.
The fit is clear. Ottawa wants more size and experience on the blue line, while Philadelphia continues searching for help down the middle.
The problem is Steve Staios reportedly has no interest in moving Shane Pinto, Dylan Cozens or Ridly Greig.
Those are the exact types of players Daniel Briere would likely target before considering a meaningful package involving Ristolainen and another established Flyer.
That gap leaves both clubs interested in solving roster needs without surrendering the pieces the other side values most.

Ristolainen carries a $5,100,000 cap hit for one more season, giving Ottawa limited long-term risk but no guarantee beyond next summer.
The Senators have $4,195,833 in projected space, so they would need to move salary or ask Philadelphia to retain part of his contract.
At 25% retention, Ottawa's charge would fall to $3,825,000. The Flyers would expect extra value for helping the Senators complete the deal.
A simple swap involving Pinto or Cozens doesn't make sense for Ottawa. Both are younger centres under contract through 2030, and their position carries more value.
Greig may be easier to discuss because he can play on the wing, but his age, contract and abrasive style make him an important part of Campbell's lineup.
Philadelphia could expand the conversation by including a scoring winger. Owen Tippett has drawn interest, though the Flyers are not reported to be actively shopping him.
That type of larger package is likely the only route toward a deal. Ottawa won't weaken its centre depth merely to add a defenceman approaching unrestricted free agency.
The Senators and Flyers remain logical partners, but the structure isn't there yet. Unless Staios changes his position or Briere broadens the return, Ristolainen may stay in Philadelphia.
