Steve Yzerman is out, and Todd McLellan now faces a Detroit Red Wings organization preparing for a clean break in the front office.
The Red Wings initially announced that Yzerman would serve in an advisory capacity during the search for his replacement after his firing as general manager.
But Max Bultman of The Athletic reported that Yzerman isn't expected to participate in hockey decisions under Detroit's next front-office leadership.
That distinction matters. An advisory title suggested Yzerman could still influence the search committee, roster planning or the transition to the next general manager.
Instead, Detroit appears ready to give its incoming hockey executive room to reshape the organization without the former GM working over his shoulder.

Detroit prepares for a full front-office reset
Yzerman had held the general manager's job since April 19, 2019, making personnel decisions through a long rebuild that never produced the breakthrough Detroit expected.
The Red Wings finished last season at 41-31-10 with 92 points, but they closed on a 2-6-2 slide and missed the postseason again.
Their -17 goal differential also exposed the gap between collecting standings points and controlling games consistently against stronger Atlantic Division opponents.
Removing Yzerman from future hockey decisions gives the next GM clear authority over the roster, scouting department, development plan and relationship with McLellan.
It also increases the pressure on Detroit's ownership group to land an established decision-maker. This can't become another slow reset built around patience and distant promises.
The new executive will inherit a team that scored 241 goals and allowed 258. Those totals point toward needs at both ends of the rink, especially across the blue line and within the supporting forward group.
McLellan, hired on December 26, 2024, remains behind the bench. But a new GM could bring different expectations regarding systems, deployment and how quickly Detroit must return to playoff contention.
Yzerman's advisory role may still exist formally during the search, yet the message around hockey operations is becoming clear: the Red Wings are moving toward a new voice with independent control.
