Connor Hellebuyck could become Lindy Ruff's biggest upgrade if the Buffalo Sabres decide patience has run out.

There's no report that Winnipeg is shopping its starting goalie or that Buffalo has submitted an offer. Marek's point centers on fit, ambition and organizational timing.
The Sabres have spent years collecting young talent, waiting for development and hoping internal growth would finally stabilize the roster.
At some point, Jarmo Kekalainen must convert that future value into an established difference-maker. Hellebuyck would represent exactly that kind of aggressive turn.
His $8,500,000 cap hit carries a major commitment, but Buffalo wouldn't be acquiring a temporary answer. It would be adding one of the league's highest-paid goalies to anchor the crease.

Winnipeg would have little reason to move Hellebuyck without receiving a package built around premium young talent, draft capital and possibly an NHL-ready replacement.
That's where the conversation becomes uncomfortable for Buffalo. The Sabres can't target an elite goalie while protecting every valuable prospect and young roster player.
Ruff would gain immediate stability behind a team that has too often allowed defensive breakdowns to become game-changing moments.
Hellebuyck's presence could also reshape Buffalo's confidence. Defensemen can play more aggressively when they trust the goalie behind them to handle difficult sequences.
But the Sabres would need to believe they're close enough to justify the cost. Trading major future pieces for a goalie makes little sense if the rest of the lineup still needs several years.
Winnipeg's position also remains unknown. Hellebuyck is still under contract, and a marketing omission or outside speculation doesn't confirm that the Jets are ready to move him.
Marek's idea still captures the pressure on Buffalo. The Sabres can continue waiting for everything to develop, or they can finally pursue a player capable of changing expectations immediately.
Hellebuyck would be the boldest move available. The question is whether Kekalainen is prepared to pay the price that boldness demands.
