Drake Batherson's name is worth a phone call for the Edmonton Oilers, but his cap-friendly deal shouldn't be mistaken for an easy grab.
Nothing here is a confirmed trade discussion between Edmonton and Ottawa. What's actually reported is a real gap between Batherson and the Senators on a new contract.
Batherson is entering the final year of his deal at a $4,975,000 cap hit before hitting unrestricted free agency in 2027.
He just delivered the best offensive season of his career, posting 33 goals and 38 assists for 71 points in 79 games, exactly the size and finishing touch Edmonton could use next to Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl.
Edmonton currently projects around $4,725,834 in cap space, just $249,166 short of absorbing his full contract outright.
Career-wise, Batherson has posted 149 goals and 215 assists for 364 points across 470 games, proof this wasn't a fluke shooting spike.
Batherson's next contract is the real risk here
The underlying numbers back it up too, a 55 percent Corsi share and 2.11 points per 60 at five-on-five, a player who drives play rather than riding an elite center.
Fitting his current deal wouldn't be hard. The real complication is what comes next.
Batherson's camp is reportedly using Adrian Kempe's contract as a comparable, an eight year deal worth $10,625,000 annually that would eat up nearly 9.4 percent of the projected $113,500,000 cap ceiling in 2027-28.
A number anywhere close to that turns a bargain rental into a much heavier long term commitment.
A realistic price likely starts with a first round equivalent, a young NHL-ready forward, and a conditional piece tied to signing long term.
Matt Savoie shouldn't be part of that package. Edmonton needs cheap, controllable young talent too badly to give him up for one guaranteed rental season.
Batherson has publicly said Ottawa feels like home, so a contract gap doesn't automatically mean he's asked out. Edmonton's smartest move is seeking permission to talk extension before giving up anything real.
If he signs in the $9,500,000 to $10,000,000 range, this becomes a real long term asset. Past $11,000,000, that money might be better split across two useful forwards instead.
The hockey fit is obvious here. The contract fit is still the whole question.
