The Toronto Maple Leafs have hired Andy O'Brien, Sidney Crosby's longtime trainer, to run a revamped Sport Performance department.

This summer's move keeps the teardown rolling. Toronto's front office has barely stopped moving since John Chayka took over as general manager on May 3.

The Maple Leafs finished last season 32-36-14, good for 78 points and 28th overall in the league. That number tells you why change was coming.

Chayka wasted no time cutting ties with several longstanding front office staffers. He installed his own people across scouting and player evaluation.

He also brought in an entirely new coaching staff under Jim Hiller and turned over roughly half the NHL roster through trades and free agency.

O'Brien fits the pattern. He is best known as Crosby's personal strength and conditioning coach, a relationship that started when Crosby was still a teenager.

O'Brien has also worked with Nathan MacKinnon, Taylor Hall and Maple Leafs forward John Tavares over the years, building a client list most trainers only dream about.

His resume includes four Stanley Cups. Two came with the Florida Panthers in 2024 and 2025 as a high-performance consultant.

The other two came with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2016 and 2017, when O'Brien served as director of sports science and performance.

Every summer, O'Brien runs high-performance camps at altitude in Vail, Colorado. Connor McDavid, Cale Makar, Mitch Marner, Macklin Celebrini, Connor Bedard and Patrick Kane have all attended more than once.

That is not a normal client roster. That is closer to an All-Star roster with a training schedule attached.

In Toronto, O'Brien will oversee strength and conditioning, but the job goes wider than that. Nutrition, injury rehabilitation and sport science all fall under his umbrella now.

He is also 48 years old and the founder and president of O'Brien Sport, bringing more than 25 years of experience into a Leafs organization that badly needed some.

With the Panthers, O'Brien oversaw the rebuild of the club's performance and sport science program. He also helped design the team's new practice facility.

Crosby, in an interview with CBC last year, credited O'Brien with shaping how he trains and how he has stayed at an elite level for two decades.

"When I first met Andy, it was all just about trying to move," Crosby said. "You want to get strong and build that way."

"But at the same time, you're just trying to be an athlete," Crosby continued. "He's a trainer, but he's also a friend."

Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun first reported that O'Brien was being hired by the Leafs.

Hiring a world-class trainer does not fix a power play or a leaky blue line. It is a smart depth move, not a rebuild by itself.

Chayka is betting that better bodies and better science eventually show up on the scoreboard. Toronto fans have heard that promise before.
