The Vancouver Canucks announced Monday that Ryan Stewart is joining the front office as Director of Hockey Strategy and Player Evaluation.
General manager Ryan Johnson made the call, and he didn't stop there.
Adam Sergerie also comes aboard as a pro scout, giving Vancouver two fresh sets of eyes on personnel decisions heading into a critical offseason.
Context matters here. The Canucks finished the season 25-49-8, good for 58 points and dead last in the entire NHL at 32nd overall.
A goal differential of 216 for and 316 against tells the real story. This wasn't a team that lost close games. It got outclassed, night after night.
Their last game of the year was a 1-6 blowout loss on the road against the Edmonton Oilers back on April 16.
That's the backdrop for these hires, and it explains why Johnson is adding scouting depth instead of standing pat.

Think of it like a construction crew showing up after the roof already caved in. You don't just patch one hole. You bring in more hands and start over from the studs.
Stewart's title alone signals intent. Player evaluation was clearly a soft spot for a roster that finished with a minus-100 goal differential.
Sergerie's job as pro scout means more boots on the ground assessing talent across the league, presumably feeding decisions the front office will make this summer and beyond.
Is this enough to turn around a franchise that just posted a 4-6-0 mark over its final ten games and limped home on a one-game losing streak? That's the real question Canucks fans are asking.
Hiring smart evaluators doesn't guarantee smart decisions get made with that information. Vancouver has burned fans before with front office promises that didn't translate to the standings.
Still, adding experienced scouting voices is rarely a bad idea for a team sitting at the bottom of the league. The bigger test comes when Johnson has to act on what Stewart and Sergerie bring him.
No word yet on what those first moves will look like, or how quickly ownership expects results after a season this bad.
