Stan Bowman and Mike Babcock enter the season under pressure after Edmonton's GM received a D+ grade for his work since July 2024.
The grade surfaced in a tenure breakdown from Mike Bartner, adding another layer to a summer in which Bowman has already reshaped both the bench and parts of the roster.
Edmonton replaced Kris Knoblauch with Babcock, moved Darnell Nurse to San Jose and added Stanley Cup-winning goaltender Frederik Andersen.
The Oilers also brought in Devon Levi, Colton Dach, Mathieu Joseph and Ryan Shea, giving Babcock a noticeably different group heading toward camp.
Yet Bowman now sounds comfortable stopping there for the moment. He told Bob Stauffer that Edmonton likes its current position and wants to preserve salary flexibility.
Bowman said the Oilers are sitting in the $4,000,000 to $4,500,000 range in available cap space, a major change from recent seasons when Edmonton operated with almost no room.
Speaking with Oilers Insider Bob Stauffer on the Oilers Now podcast, Bowman implied that his club was finished making moves this offseason while also saying that the trade of Nurse did help create a bit of flexibility under the salary cap.
“This is sort of the ideal situation,” he said. “You can't always put yourself in this position because things change, or you have players that are going to get raises that you definitely need, and sometimes your team is in a spot where you don't have much room. That's how we've been operating the first two years that I was here. We had no space at all.
“We were not in a position to if a player comes available in November that makes $2.5 million that you like, but they don't want, they're just trying to shed salary, we were never even in the market for that. It was impossible. But now we want to leave some money available. " - Michael Whitaker
Bowman is betting patience improves the Oilers later
That is the heart of the plan. Bowman doesn't expect the roster that opens the season to be the same one Edmonton carries into the playoffs.
He specifically pointed toward future trades, free-agent additions or deadline moves as possible ways to alter the lineup once the season reveals what Babcock actually needs.
That approach gives Edmonton something it rarely had before: the ability to react. Bowman noted that a $2,500,000 player becoming available during the season used to be almost impossible for the Oilers to consider.
Now the front office can wait rather than forcing another August transaction. That matters with questions still hanging around the forward group and Edmonton's depth down the middle.
The D+ grade shows there is still skepticism about Bowman's tenure. Changing coaches, moving Nurse and reshaping the roster means expectations will rise quickly once the games begin.
Babcock will also have a major say in how those moves are judged. If Andersen stabilizes the crease and the new forward depth works, Bowman's summer will look much stronger than the current grade suggests.
But the GM has made his position clear: Edmonton isn't finished forever, it is simply finished forcing moves right now.
That leaves Bowman with cap space, time and one clear challenge. If the Oilers expose another roster weakness early, the flexibility he protected has to turn into a meaningful addition.
