Oilers organization goaltender leaves the team and roster: Stan Bowman acted fast

Eemil Vinni is entering the Edmonton Oilers' system, and Mike Babcock now has another young goaltender in the organization.

The Bakersfield Condors signed Vinni to a one-year, two-way American Hockey League contract for the 2026-27 season, adding another option beneath Edmonton's NHL crease.

At first glance, it looked like another summer depth move. The timing now carries a much clearer explanation.

Jonsson has told fans in Fort Wayne that he plans to return home to Sweden next season, opening a spot in the Oilers' goaltending pipeline.

That departure changes the picture for Bakersfield and the Fort Wayne Komets. Edmonton needed another goalie in the system rather than simply adding one for competition.

The expectation shared out of Fort Wayne is that Nathaniel Day and Vinni could handle the Komets' crease next season. That gives Vinni an immediate path to meaningful starts.

Vinni now fills a clear organizational need

This isn't an NHL crease move, and Vinni's contract is with Bakersfield. But it gives the Oilers another goaltender they can place and develop within their minor-league structure.

Edmonton finished last season at 41-30-11, and the organization enters a new year with Babcock behind the bench and another offseason of pressure around its goaltending depth.

Vinni's signing now looks less like surplus inventory and more like a direct response to an outgoing goalie. One spot was about to open, and Edmonton's system moved to cover it.

For Vinni, that could be valuable. A crowded depth chart can leave young goalies waiting for starts, while an available ECHL role offers regular work and a chance to push upward.

Day also remains part of that equation, meaning Fort Wayne could become an important proving ground for two young goalies connected to the Oilers' development system.

The bigger consequence is organizational stability. Jonsson's planned return to Sweden created an opening, and Vinni's arrival gives the Oilers a ready replacement before training camps even open.

What initially looked predictable now has its reason. Edmonton wasn't just adding another goalie. The organization was preparing for one to leave.
