Evander Kane remains unsigned as Vancouver Canucks head coach Manny Malhotra moves forward without the veteran winger.
Kane's NHL future has taken another turn with reported interest from Ak Bars Kazan of the KHL. Sport-Express reporter Mikhail Zislis linked the Russian club to the 35-year-old forward.
No agreement has been reached, but the timing matters. NHL teams have spent the summer filling roster spots, and Kane is still searching for a contract with training camps getting closer.
He finished last season with Vancouver after previously playing in Winnipeg, Buffalo, San Jose and Edmonton. Kane recorded 31 points across 71 games with the Canucks.
His experience isn't in question. Kane has played 1,001 NHL games and produced 648 points, giving interested teams a long track record to evaluate before making a commitment.

But the longer he stays unsigned, the less leverage he carries. Teams looking for veteran depth can wait, assess injuries and roster needs, then decide whether Kane fits at their price.
KHL interest changes the pressure on Kane
Ak Bars Kazan now gives Kane another possible route if NHL opportunities don't materialize. That doesn't mean his North American career is finished, but it puts a real alternative on the table.
For Kane, the decision could eventually come down to role and opportunity. An NHL club may view him as a bottom-six addition who can bring size and secondary scoring without requiring major deployment.
The KHL could offer a different situation. A club willing to give Kane heavier minutes and a larger offensive role could become more attractive if NHL teams continue to stay away.
Vancouver has already moved into a new chapter under Malhotra, which makes a reunion difficult to picture unless the club's plans change before camp.
That leaves Kane in an uncomfortable offseason position. He has the résumé to draw attention, but NHL clubs clearly haven't rushed to secure him.
Kane can still land another NHL contract. Yet every roster spot filled around the league narrows the market and gives teams more control over the terms of any potential offer.
The interest from Kazan now adds pressure to the waiting game. Kane may soon have to decide whether to keep chasing one more NHL opportunity or take his career overseas.
