Adam Fantilli's contract standoff with Columbus just reopened a door Philadelphia supposedly closed weeks ago.
Per William James of Philly Hockey Now, the Flyers should seriously consider circling back to the offer sheet route, a real reversal from where this conversation stood in July.
Back then, Anthony Di Marco reported Philadelphia was finished making aggressive swings for the summer after its blockbuster offer sheet to Leo Carlsson.
"They aren't offer-sheeting Columbus Blue Jackets forward Adam Fantilli," Di Marco wrote at the time, also ruling out Zach Werenski and Simon Edvinsson as targets.
Di Marco laid out three specific reasons Philadelphia had moved on. GM Danny Briere didn't view Fantilli's production as being on Carlsson's level, he wanted to avoid burning bridges with rival front offices by offer-sheeting multiple players in one summer, and his own son happens to work as a video coach for Columbus.
Why the gap with Columbus keeps this door open
What's changed is the state of Fantilli's own negotiations. Per Elliotte Friedman, Fantilli and the Blue Jackets remain genuinely far apart in talks.
Friedman suggested Fantilli could be chasing a deal in the same range as fellow 2023 draft classmates Carlsson, who signed at $18,000,000 annually, and Connor Bedard, who landed at $15,000,000.
Columbus, by contrast, is reportedly sitting closer to $12,000,000 to $12,500,000, a real gap given how the market has moved this summer.
Pro Hockey Rumors framed this holdout as the third domino in a summer that's already produced record-setting deals for Fantilli's entire draft class. He went third overall in 2023, one spot behind Carlsson and two behind Bedard.
If that gap between his asking price and Columbus's offer stays this wide, it creates exactly the kind of opening a cap-flush team could exploit.
Fantilli posted 24 goals and 35 assists for 59 points in 82 games last season at just 21, a 6-foot-2 frame with real physicality and offensive upside that fits what Philadelphia has targeted in recent additions, even if his faceoff numbers and defensive game still need real polish.
Philadelphia's financial flexibility is exactly why this speculation keeps resurfacing despite Di Marco's earlier report ruling it out.
An offer sheet at Fantilli's likely cap range wouldn't come cheap though, probably costing multiple first round picks if Columbus chose not to match. Combined with the relationship risk Briere was reportedly trying to avoid, this is far from a sure thing.
But with training camp barely a month away and Fantilli still unsigned, the door Philadelphia seemingly shut in July looks like it's cracking back open.
