Philippe Myers might be running out of road in Toronto, and general manager John Chayka doesn't sound done making moves.
This offseason, Chayka has already reshaped this roster once, and multiple reports suggest he's not close to finished working the phones.
Myers has reportedly asked out after sliding hard down the Maple Leafs' depth chart, with a real path toward spending all of next season with the Marlies instead.
Darren Raddysh now handles the right side, Emil Andrae can play either spot, and prospect Ben Danford flashed enough during the Marlies Calder Cup run to squeeze Myers out entirely.
Andrae chipped in 13 points over 61 games this season, exactly the steady depth Toronto wants from that spot instead of Myers.
Myers has one season left at an $850,000 cap hit, making him an easy contract to move if any team wants a simple change of scenery deal.
Dakota Joshua is the other name attached to trade rumors, and his situation is a lot more complicated financially.
Why Dakota Joshua's contract makes this messier
Joshua is owed $3,250,000 this season, carries a 12-team no-trade clause, and had a rough first year in Toronto with 18 points over 55 games.
He can be a physical presence, but the secondary scoring never showed up consistently, and now he's fighting just to hold a bottom six spot.
With Toronto over the salary cap and Max Domi's roster spot still uncertain, Joshua keeps coming up as the forward most likely to get moved.
Trading a $3.25 million depth forward with a no-trade clause is never simple, but sitting him in the press box all year helps nobody either.
All of it points to one thing. Chayka is building around a two year window to keep Auston Matthews happy before his extension talks open next July.
Whether either trade actually happens before camp, or these names just keep circling as rumors, is something only Chayka's phone can answer.
