Dylan Larkin is putting Todd McLellan and the Detroit Red Wings in an uncomfortable spot as training camp moves closer.
Reports indicate Detroit's captain has not backed away from the trade request that surfaced this spring, leaving the Red Wings with a major unresolved roster issue.
Larkin reportedly gave Detroit a short list of destinations he would consider, a major factor because his contract carries a full no-movement clause. That gives the captain significant control over where this goes next.
Detroit also can't treat this like a routine trade negotiation. Larkin remains the club's top center and finished last season with 34 goals and 67 points across 74 games.
That production explains why the asking price matters. Moving a first-line center without getting enough immediate value back could leave a massive hole down the middle before puck drop.

The timing creates another layer of pressure. Larkin is expected to report rather than stay away if Detroit hasn't completed a deal before camp, according to the report.
That could put McLellan in the unusual position of running camp with his captain still wearing the Winged Wheel while everyone in the locker room knows a trade request remains on the table.
Dylan Larkin still controls Detroit's next move
Larkin's contract runs through the 2030-31 season with an $8,700,000 cap hit, giving Detroit contractual security but little leverage over destination because of his no-movement protection.
Minnesota has been linked as one possible landing spot, but Detroit still needs an offer strong enough to justify moving the centerpiece of its forward group.
That's where the harsh reality lands for the Red Wings. They can refuse a weak return, but they can't simply send Larkin wherever they find the best package.
And if no trade materializes, Detroit could begin camp with an awkward question hanging over every line combination, power-play look and media session involving its captain.
Larkin has already shown what he means to the lineup. His 14 power-play goals last season underline just how difficult his role would be to replace immediately.
The Red Wings can control their asking price. Larkin controls which destinations are available. Until those two sides meet, Detroit's biggest offseason issue isn't going anywhere.
Should the Detroit Red Wings trade Dylan Larkin before training camp?
