Dylan Larkin and head coach Todd McLellan are staring at a Detroit Red Wings front office surrounded by more questions than answers.

A report Thursday said Detroit has not conducted a single interview for its general manager opening, an extraordinary development this deep into the offseason.

That leaves one of hockey's biggest summer storylines sitting almost completely still while the calendar keeps moving toward training camp and preseason preparation.

The Red Wings finished last season 41-31-10 with 92 points, missing the playoffs after closing their schedule on a three-game slide.

Larkin remains the biggest name tied to the uncertainty. The captain produced 34 goals and 67 points in 74 games last season while carrying an $8,700,000 cap hit.

Detroit also has major roster business hanging over the organization, including Simon Edvinsson's contract situation with the young defenseman still needing long-term clarity.

Detroit is running out of comfortable runway

The concerning part isn't simply that the Red Wings need someone making final hockey decisions. It's that several decisions could shape the direction of the club before puck drop.

McLellan can prepare the locker room, establish lines and set expectations. But roster construction, contracts and any major trade discussions sit above the bench.

That separation matters when the team is coming off a season with a -17 goal differential and already faces pressure to take another step in the Atlantic Division.

The report also makes the timeline difficult to ignore. Detroit isn't searching in May with months available to reset the hockey operations department. The season is approaching.

The Red Wings have spent years trying to move from rebuilding team to playoff team. Entering another season with uncertainty at the top would only raise the temperature around every personnel decision.

And if Larkin's future becomes part of that discussion, the stakes jump immediately. Moving a captain signed through 2030-31 would reshape far more than Detroit's top six.

For a franchise needing direction, August 20 brought another uncomfortable development: the GM search apparently hasn't even reached the interview stage.
