Tim Stutzle sent a pointed message about Ottawa's direction, and Andrew Campbell now has to shape the locker room around it.
The Senators entered the summer dealing with the fallout from Brady Tkachuk's departure to the Florida Panthers. Losing their captain changed the roster, but Stutzle's latest comments suggest the bigger story may involve the room itself.
Asked about Ottawa's future, Stutzle put the focus on players pulling in the same direction.
"As long as you all go for the same goal, I think at some point you're going to achieve it," Stutzle said.
He then added another line that immediately drew attention: "I think also we have a lot of guys who want to be in Ottawa."
That wording matters after months of uncertainty surrounding Tkachuk. Stutzle never named his former captain, but stressing commitment to Ottawa left plenty of room for interpretation.
Ottawa's locker room enters a different chapter
The tension surrounding Tkachuk's situation wasn't limited to outside speculation. Elliotte Friedman previously revealed that a Senators player had contacted him as frustration grew inside the locker room.
"The Tkachuk thing... it was time, it was time to end the noise around the whole situation," Friedman said while discussing what had unfolded.
Friedman also explained that players were tired of the situation and that the podcast involving Brady and Matthew Tkachuk had created problems. That added another layer to Stutzle's comments.
Keith Tkachuk's appearance on the podcast had already generated attention after he criticized Ottawa's group while Brady Tkachuk was part of the conversation. The episode became another issue surrounding the captain.
Now Stutzle is speaking about shared goals and players who want to remain in Ottawa. Whether that was aimed directly at Tkachuk or not, the timing makes the message difficult to ignore.
Andrew Campbell inherits a team that can now move forward without the constant questions surrounding its former captain. The challenge becomes turning that cleaner locker-room dynamic into results once puck drop arrives.
For Stutzle, the message was simple without being loud. Ottawa's next group needs commitment, alignment and players fully invested in wearing the Senators jersey.
