Ben Danford just landed at No. 3 in TLN's latest Toronto Maple Leafs prospect rankings, and his path to get there wasn't a straight line.
Toronto took the defenseman 31st overall in 2024 out of Oshawa, where he posted modest numbers, 1 goal and 32 assists in 64 games during his draft year.
The counting stats never told the full story. Danford's mobility and hockey IQ stood out well before the point totals caught up.
Named Oshawa's captain the following season, his production actually dipped to 25 points in 61 games, even as his physical game took a real step forward.
A long stay at Leafs training camp delayed his OHL return, and he was eventually traded to Brantford, where he wore an "A" and logged top-pair minutes.
Danford also made Canada's World Junior roster, picking up an assist in 7 games on the way to a bronze medal finish.
His pro debut came under pressure too, inserted straight into the Marlies' Calder Cup playoff lineup during the North Division Finals against Cleveland.
Why a crowded Leafs blue line still works in his favor
Danford thrived in that spotlight, finishing the AHL postseason with a goal and two assists in 16 games while helping Toronto win the Calder Cup.
He earned real trust fast, working his way onto the Marlies' second power play unit by the time the Finals rolled around.
Toronto already has seven NHL defensemen under contract, plus depth names like Philippe Myers, Dakota Mermis, and William Villeneuve in the mix too.
That crowded picture, plus a preseason schedule trimmed to just four games, makes cracking the Leafs roster out of camp a real long shot for Danford.
Starting the year with the Marlies is probably the best outcome anyway, giving him regular minutes instead of a fringe NHL role right away.
If injuries hit Toronto's blue line, Danford looks like the first call-up option given how he handled pressure all last season.
Whether it happens this year or next, Toronto looks like it finally has the homegrown defenseman it's been missing for a long time.
