Auston Matthews left no room for doubt as Jim Hiller's Maple Leafs star delivered a forceful message on Gavin McKenna.

Matthews didn't hedge when asked about the first overall pick. He went straight at the expectations surrounding McKenna and made it clear he believes the hype is justified.

“He's a special player. He's a special person,” Matthews said. “It's been awesome to get to spend some time with him, get to know him.”

Then came the line that carried the most weight: “He's gonna be an incredible player in this league.”

That's a massive public endorsement from Matthews. In the clip, he keeps his focus forward and delivers the praise without backing away from the enormous standard he's setting for McKenna.

Matthews also shifted part of the responsibility onto the veterans around McKenna, making his message about much more than raw talent.

Matthews sends a clear message about McKenna

“It's just on us to support him, communicate with him, help him out in any way that we can,” Matthews said.

That part shouldn't be overlooked. Matthews isn't talking about McKenna like a prospect who needs years before anyone should expect something meaningful. He's talking about someone he believes belongs in the NHL conversation immediately.

And that creates pressure. Once a player of Matthews' stature publicly calls a newcomer an eventual “incredible player,” every shift, line assignment and offensive opportunity gets watched differently.

McKenna will still have to earn his role once the games begin. Training camp, deployment and how quickly he handles NHL pace will decide how fast the opportunity grows.

But Matthews has already made his position unmistakable. He doesn't sound cautiously optimistic about McKenna. He sounds convinced.

That also puts a spotlight on how Toronto handles the young forward around Jim Hiller's lineup. Supporting McKenna is one thing. Finding the right role without burying him or asking too much too soon is another.

Matthews' words raise the temperature before McKenna has even had the chance to settle in. The expectations are no longer coming only from outside the locker room.

One of the biggest names in hockey just attached his own reputation to them.
