The Chicago Blackhawks were under scrutiny when the NFL was undergoing their name changes due to their racial connotations, notably the Washington Redskins changing their name to the Commanders. The Blackhawks were under similar questioning, and many fans were wondering if they would change their name.
The Blackhawks have said that their name comes from the honouring of a real-life Native American, Black Hawk of the Sac & Fox Nation in Illinois. Their statement focuses on the team's intent to celebrate Black Hawk's legacy.
Blackhawks Acknowledge the Fine Line Between Respect and Disrespect
There is clearly a fine line between trying to honour Native American heritage and culture and disrespecting it, and the Blackhawks are trying to stay on the correct side of that line.
There is still clearly conversations that are happening within the Blackhawks organization to ensure that they are continuing to be respectful of the heritage that is their namesake.
