Do you ever find yourself thinking, "Well technically they can still win if they score twice in the next seven seconds!" For fans of teams at the bottom of the standings, it is an all-too-familiar feeling. Tonight it actually happened though as the Avalanche scored twice in 7 seconds at the end of the first period to cut a three-goal deficit to just one. First, Zach Parise scored his first goal as a member of the Avalanche.
What happened next is almost unbelievable.
Following the faceoff after the goal, Avalanche defenseman Sam Girard skated down the far side wall and chipped the puck into the offensive zone. It appeared as though he was just going for a typical dump and chase play, which is exactly what Hurricanes goalie Pyotr Kochetkov was thinking. However, the puck just so happened to sail right into the net as Kochetkov was caught completely off guard.
It was later revealed that the goal would be the last shot the young goaltender would face.
Antti Raanta was serving as the backup goaltender for the Hurricanes tonight. However, he would lead the team out for the second period as head coach Rob Brind'Amour decided to bench Kochetkov for giving up the unacceptable goal to close out the 1st period.
However, the chaos does not end there. It is not clear what happened between the 2nd and 3rd periods, but once again, the Hurricanes would change netminders.
The change seems to have been injury related as the team later announced that Raanta would not return to the game as he had suffered a lower-body injury.
The Hurricanes are holding onto a 4-2 lead halfway through the 3rd period in this crazy game.
