While it made sense this summer for the St. Louis Blues to hand the Edmonton Oilers two offer sheets, when the price of those contracts for Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway came out, many were shocked at the price the Blues paid. No one more so than GM Stan Bowman, who was recently interviewed by The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun, and in that interview, he blasted both young players and how little they deserved those deals.
In this case, it's very hard to argue with Stan Bowman, as neither player has yet topped 100 total games played in the NHL, so to hand someone like Broberg over $4 million annually was quite the decision for Doug Armstrong. Neither player is older than 22-years of age however, so it makes sense that the Blues bet on their potential, but given how the two will earn almost $7 million AAV combined, it's a massive risk for them.
Ultimately, this failure comes down to former GM Ken Holland, who should have locked the two in for at least another few years when they were with the AHL's Bakersfield Condors, but failed to do so and lost two potentially very cheap deals, so now both parties move on to hopefully bigger and better things.
