Earlier today the Boston Bruins conducted a press conference to discuss the upcoming 2024-25 NHL season. The team was of course asked about restricted free agent Jeremy Swayman. Former Bruin and now front office member Cam Neely took a shot at Jeremy Swayman and his agent for not taking a generous 64 million dollar offer.
This sparked a major conversation around the NHL about what Jeremy Swayman has been offered by the Boston Bruins and why he is not in training camp. Now tonight Jeremy Swayman's agent Lewis Gross released a statement. In the statement, Lewis Gross confirms no offer even close to 64 million was made and that the accusations by the Bruins have now caused potential problems.
The Boston Bruins had planned to make Jeremy Swayman their starting goalie for the upcoming season. The Bruins traded away former Vezina Trophy winner Linus Ullmark in expectation of Jeremy Swayman taking another step forward. However, they forgot to get his contract signed before making the move thus giving Jeremy Swayman a lot more leverage to negotiate.
Jeremy Swayman has been one of the best goalies in the NHL over the past several seasons. In each of the last 2 seasons, he has had a goals-against average below 2.55 and a save percentage over 0.915. At just 25 years old many expect Jeremy Swayman to be the best goaltender in the NHL in his prime. If the Boston Bruins' handling of this situation drives Jeremy Swayman out of Boston it could be one of the biggest losses for the franchise in decades.
With the NHL season just around the corner, Joonas Korpisalo is expected to be the starting goalie for the Boston Bruins on opening night. If this situation continues to get out of hand then we could potentially see extension talks turn into trade talks incredibly quickly.
As more details emerge regarding the Jeremy Swayman saga and where it is going we will pass along the latest news and notes.
