After being the easiest first-round exit in the last Stanley Cup playoffs, the Washington Capitals have a lot they want to make up for heading into the rapidly approaching regular season. Like every team in the league, they have taken training camp very seriously, giving many prospects a chance to sit in for a chance among those already playing at the NHL level to see if they are right for a lineup spot. Among the new faces hoping for a fighting shot was 18-year-old Terik Parascak, who before being added to their training camp roster was their 2024 first-round draft pick at 17th overall.
However, with the season starting up in less than a week, the Washington Capitals have been forced to make some cuts to their training camp roster. Now, they have reduced their pool to just 30 players. Terik Parascak was the unlucky player left off the list, having instead been returned to his junior team, the Prince George Cougars in the WHL.
Terik Parascak had an impressive showing in his last season with the Prince George Cougars, posting 43 goals and 105 total points in 68 games. Yet, he had trouble making a bold enough presence on the ice during training camp. He was one of three remaining players 20 or younger left on the roster, with Ivan Miroschnichenko, who already has 21 NHL games of experience, and Andrew Cristall, who led the three in preseason points.
Having been the least productive or reliable of the three, Terik Parascak was a reasonable cut from training. Only so many players can fit their roster, and at 18 years old, the young forward would be a better benefit to the Washington Capitals after some more development in the WHL. Having been welcomed back to the team with open arms, there is little doubt he will get the time to work on being the 2nd or 3rd-line player he will likely end up in the NHL a few years down the line.
The Washington is set to play their final 2024 preseason game against the Boston Bruins from Capital One Arena on Saturday, October 5th. With Terik Parascak off the lineup, the Capitals will be just a little older heading into the season. However, if he performs with the Cougars as well as he did last season, he could be playing in regular NHL games sooner than later.
