Toronto Maple Leafs reporters Nick Kypreos and Justin Bourne got into a heated argument today regarding Mitch Marner's value.

The two noted Leafs fans were talking about what Marner could get in free agency or on his next contract from the Leafs when the conversation devolved into a heated argument.

Kypreos, when asked what he thinks Marner will get on his next deal, had a shocking response.

He seems to think that Marner is a top-five player in the NHL in terms of contract value, saying he could get as much as Oilers superstar Leon Draisaitl.

"I think he could be worth close to Leon Draisaitl,14 million. I'm telling you, if you stuck him out on the market as an unrestricted free agent, I think someone's going to come to him between 13 and 14 (Million)."

Bourne quickly countered, saying he's worth only 12 million dollars, but Kypreos pushed him on it.

"Why? Why 12? He's making 11 now!"

Bourne justified his position by pointing to some consistent trouble spots in Marner's game.

So far in his career, Marner has not proven that he can produce without other star players around him, and he has failed to show up in the playoffs. Bourne pointed both of these facts out.

"Because he can't produce at 5-on-5 on his own. Because he can't produce can't produce in the big games. These are truths! Have you followed the team?"

Kypreos countered that argument by saying that he has the third most points in the league over the last five seasons, implying that he deserves to be paid like a top-five player in the league.

"These are narratives that have followed him, by you, from others saying he's not worth it, get rid of him, he's not worth it. Over the past five years, only McDavid and maybe one other guy (have produced more points). He's the third highest-producing player in the last five years. Don't tell me he's not up there with the rest of them!"

Kypreos was stretching the truth here though. Marner is actually 7th in the league in scoring over the past five seasons, behind McDavid, Draisaitl, Mackinnon, Rantanen, Panarin, and Auston Matthews.

In general, the fans seem to agree with Bourne on this one. Could Marner get 14 million in free agency? Maybe, but it would be a big overpayment.
