The Colorado Avalanche are off to a dreadful start in 2024/25, and now it appears as though the locker room is on the verge of falling apart completely.
Through four games this season, the Colorado Avalanche have been the worst team in the entire NHL, and despite their hopes for a Stanley Cup, they haven't even looked like a playoff team to this point of the season. The biggest culprit for this dreadful start is Alexandar Georgiev, who has allowed over five goals per start with just an .803 save percentage, and with injuries to three top names, it's safe to say that everything that could go wrong, has gone wrong.
Now, the team are facing another crisis, with the ongoing contract negotiations with star forward Mikko Rantanen not progressing as the team would have hoped, with Nick Kypreos reporting that things could get ugly.
«Star winger Mikko Rantanen and the Avalanche don't appear to be close to an extension. The feeling out there is the Avs are reluctant to get his average salary anywhere near Nathan MacKinnon's $12.6 million (U.S.) at this point in time. They are also hoping to have a clearer picture on captain Gabriel Landeskog's health and future before deciding how high they need to go to retain Rantanen.» As of right now, Rantanen seemingly wants to approach Nathan MacKinnon's AAV on his next deal, but with the team reluctant to do just that, it could cause a major rift in the locker room. No. 96 is eligible for an extension at the end of this campaign, and with the Avalanche struggling and not getting close to a deal, a trade becomes hgihly possible ahead of the trade deadline, and with the team falling apart, things could get very ugly in Denver.
