Ever since the Quebec Nordiques were relocated to Colorado 30 years ago, fans in Quebec City have been begging the NHL for a return, with some speculation indicating that a return could be close. Unfortunately, that never came to fruition despite the struggles of the Arizona Coyotes, with the NHL instead opting to move to Salt Lake City behind the impressive bid of owner Ryan Smith.
Now, a new development has revealed the NHL had the opportunity to indeed move the Coyotes to Quebec City with the backing of billionaire Luc Poirier, but ultimately chose against it, with the feeling around the NHL being that the league didn't want to return to Canada.
Despite the league needing to pay to keep the Coyotes alive, they were seemingly against the move to Quebec, and even when the league were ready to expand, it appears Poirier was ready to spend what was needed to make Quebec team No. 32, with speculation revealing that Seattle simply came up with a better offer for the situation. With the clear backing, an arena and a dedicated fanbase in place, it's unclear what Quebec City could do to bring the league back, but for now, it appears Gary Bettman is intent on expanding the game in the US and ignoring the hungry fans in Canada.
