Pittsburgh Penguins Place Player on Waivers Day After Trade With the Nashville Predators
The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired Philip Tomasino on Monday, and now it appears they've made way for him with a surprising waiver move.
The 2024/25 season hasn't gone the way anyone in Pittsburgh would have hoped or expected, and with a record of 7-12-4, the Penguins could be on their way to a massive fire sale.
However, on Monday they made a surprise acquisition, landing Philip Tomasino from the Nashville Predators, adding some much needed youth to this lineup as they look to turn things around.
Now, the corresponding move has occurred, as the team have officially placed Valtteri Puustinen on waivers, according to a report from top NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman.
The 25-year old had played in 10 games for Pittsburgh this season, posting 1 goal and 2 points in that time, with some believing the former seventh round pick could earn more playing time moving forward.
Unfortunately that doesn't appear to be the case, as Puustinen is now on waivers, and given the potential he's flashed, he could be a cheap option for several teams around the NHL.
After being selected back in the 2019 NHL Draft, Puustinen has played in 63 NHL games, tallying 6 goals and 23 points in that time, and while that's solid success for someone drafted so late, it's safe to say that he's struggled to turn that potential into production.
The belief within the organization however is that he will pass through waivers unclaimed, and given the talent that's been added to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins over the last week, he'd be another huge addition.
With the Penguins struggling to get their way into a Stanley Cup Playoffs position, it's safe to say that if things continue getting worse we could see some more drastic moves, but for now it appears they remain optimistic that they can get back into it this season after these recent moves.
