Rumors about the New York Rangers looking to trade their captain Jacob Trouba have been going around for months now.
It all started last summer when reports confirmed that the team wanted to trade him, but couldn't due to his no-trade clause. But for all this time, his name remained in the discussions.
Then, on Friday morning, Trouba wasn't at his team's morning skate, and it was confirmed that he wouldn't be on the lineup tonight as the Rangers face the Pittsburgh Penguins:
No one knows what will happen to Trouba. Elliotte Friedman shared an update on the situation, helping us understand what could unfold for the Rangers captain.
In a post on X, he wrote that the Rangers likely have a trade in the works for him, and if he doesn't accept to lift his no-trade clause, will be placed on waivers and claimed by the team on the other end of the deal: the Columbus Blue Jackets.
As the insider noted, such a scenario already happened back in 2005 in the Sergei Fedorov trade between the Anaheim Ducks and the Blue Jackets. Todd Marchant, a player involved in the deal, refused to waive his clause but still joined the other team by going through waivers.
Read Friedman's post here:
Despite being seventh in the Metropolitan Division, the Blue Jackets are only two points away from reaching the New York Rangers at the fourth rank. They don't need much to get to the next level, and an experienced player such as Trouba could help the team achieve its goals.
While his contributions have been limited in the past seasons, he brings leadership and physicality, qualities that many teams look for in a player.
Stay tuned, as this situation will be very interesting to follow in the next few hours.
