Last year the entire hockey world was shocked by what happened in the U.K, as Nottingham Panthers and former Pittsburgh Penguins forward Adam Johnson was tragically cut by a skate, leading to his passing.
The moment has led to widespread change among lower level leagues around the world, enforcing neck guards which is a great sign, but the passing is still an absolute tragedy, and one that rocked the sport to its core.
Now, the Panthers have paid incredible tribute to Johnson, as they have officially retired his No. 47 jersey with an amazing, heartfelt video to show just how much he meant to the team and the community.
The ceremony took place with Johnson's family in attendance at ice level, in what was a very emotional situation for all involved, with the team wanting to pay tribute to one of the best players to ever don a Panthers jersey.
Panthers CEO Omar Pacha summed up Johnson perfectly during his statement in the ceremony, keeping his feelings about Johnson short and sweet.
Although he played just seven games with the team (4 goals, 7 points), Johnson's impact went much further than his play on the ice, as he brought legitimacy and respect to the Panthers team, and he became beloved by all of his teammates through that short period of time.
Despite the time that has passed, this tragedy becomes no less shocking and hard to stomach for any hockey fans, and with the team and the league honouring his contributions during his time in the UK, it's safe to say that his memory is going to live long in the memory of many people around the world.
