Elias Pettersson, currently in the first season of his eight-year, $11,600,000 AAV contract, hasn't done enough on the ice to satisfy his organization.
Despite a 26-point tally in 30 games this season, Pettersson has been involved in plenty of trade rumors in the past weeks.
Mike Futa was the latest analyst to throw his hat in the ring.
Indeed, in a recent intervention on Sportsnet's The Fan Hockey Show, he proposed a trade sending Pettersson to the Montreal Canadiens.
He suggested that the Canucks could send Pettersson and a 2nd round draft pick for Christian Dvorak, David Savard, and Cole Caufield.
The Montreal Canadiens could use some help at the center position, but as they showed in the past, the President of Hockey Operations Jeff Gorton, and General Manager Kent Hughes aren't willing to sacrifice assets.
While the idea of getting Pettersson could be enticing, parting ways with Cole Caufield seems unlikely.
Caufield is three years younger and is signed to a much smaller contract (eight-year, $7,850,000 AAV). He also has more points than Pettersson, with 17 goals and 12 assists in 31 games.
However, that doesn't mean the management won't trade David Savard or Christian Dvorak at the deadline.
Both of them are set to become free agents, and it's unlikely they'll remain in Montreal next season, especially Dvorak.
Many teams would be inclined to pay a hefty price to acquire them for the playoffs, given their defensive abilities.
If the Habs get an offer they can't refuse, they might do it, but not if it involves Cole Caufield.
