The Vancouver Canucks have struggled as of late due to injury, and with the speculation around the relationship of J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson, a blockbuster trade has seemingly been brewing.
Now, according to a report from Marco Normandin, there was a deal in place to send Pettersson to Carolina early in 2024, but ultimately, the team backed out of the deal that looked like this:
In the deal, Vancouver would have landed star forward Martin Necas, veteran blue liner Brett Pesce and an unknown draft pick, with all three of the players in the deal unsigned when the reported negotiations took place.
Since that point, all three players have signed deals to stay with their respective teams, and given the breakout season of Necas, who has 45 points in 37 games this season, it's safe to say that Vancouver may regret not making the deal.
The likely reason for them not making the deal was that they would instead have to have two major free agency conversations, rather than just one in Pettersson, and given the development that they'd already seen from EP40, it makes total sense that they wanted to stick with their home grown star.
Ultimately though, Pettersson played well in 2023/24, helping Vancouver to Game 7 of the second round in the Stanley Cup Finals, and even with the controversy that surrounds him this season, he remains a huge piece of their future, and if he isn't moved, fans will continue to support him as he continues to produce at a solid level.
