The Oilers have had problems on their blueline for some time now.
It is not surprising that the team with arguably the most stacked forward core would have problems elsewhere in the lineup.
After all, when you are paying two forwards just under 27 million dollars, it is always going to be difficult to put together a deep roster everywhere else.
The team has make tweaks to their blueline over the years, most recently this summer when they traded one of their veteran blueliners to the San Jose Sharks.
Of course, the defenseman in question is Cody Ceci. Most Oilers fans were relieved by the move considering the fact that Ceci has just not been very good for awhile.
Unfortunately for those fans though, new rumors suggest that the organization may be looking to bring Ceci back into the fold.
NHL insider David Pagnotta recently noted that the Oilers have interest in Sharks defenseman Mario Ferraro, as well as Cody Ceci.
Of course, the Sharks are certainly going to be open for business as they are in the hunt for another top pick int he 2025 draft as they remain in rebuild mode just one year after winning the draft lottery.
Ceci likely would not get them too much on the trade market as he has just 3 goals and 12 points in 45 games for the Sharks this season.
However, he does have a rating of just -8 which is not too bad for a team in 31st place and with a -44 goal differential.
Its not like Ceci has been sheltered either. He's averaging nearly 22 minutes a night on one of the worst teams in the league.
He certainly deserves some props for that. Perhaps this is why the Oilers are circling back around on him.
With all of that being said, many Oilers fans and many in management alike probably have many bad memories of Ceci screwing things up.
His track record is questionable at best and he could prove to be a huge liability once again.
Every move in the NHL is risky though, so the question is whether or not this is a risk worth taking for Edmonton.
