Leafs GM decision finalized but a bigger twist is unfolding
Auston Matthews and Craig Berube now head into Toronto’s new front-office era with John Chayka in and Mats Sundin back.
That is the real shift here. The Maple Leafs are expected to announce Chayka as general manager, while Sundin joins as senior executive advisor in hockey operations.
Toronto could have played this safe with another familiar executive path. Instead, it went for a split model built on one franchise icon and one younger operator with a very different résumé.
Sundin changes the emotional weight of the move right away. He is not just another advisor walking in off a list. He is still one of the biggest names this organization has ever had, and that gives the hire instant force.
Chayka is the sharper gamble. He gets the main chair in a market that just watched a 32-36-14 season go off the rails and is done waiting for cosmetic fixes.
That is why the next layer matters too. Reports around the move suggest Brandon Pridham is expected to remain part of the operation, while Shane Doan may be on the way out. Pridham already serves as assistant general manager, and Doan has held the role of special advisor to the general manager.

Keeping Pridham would be one of the smartest parts of this whole reset. New leadership is one thing. Losing one of the club’s core cap and contract minds at the same time would be another problem on top of the first one.
That makes this feel bigger than a headline hire. Toronto is not only changing names on the office doors. It is trying to build a cleaner chain of command around Berube and a roster that still carries heavy money at the top.
Matthews sits at 13250000 and William Nylander at 11500000, so this front office does not get the luxury of learning on the fly for long. The pressure is immediate.

Sundin can help set the tone. Chayka has to help set the direction. And Pridham, if he stays, helps make sure the plan can actually work under the cap.
Doan’s expected exit would be part of that same shakeup. Sometimes a new structure is not only about who comes in. It is also about which voices no longer fit the next version of the room.
That is why this update lands hard in Toronto. The Leafs are not patching the front office anymore. They are rebuilding it around Chayka, Sundin, and the idea that the old model already had its chance.
