David Reinbacher and Martin St-Louis are not getting a quick playoff fix on Montreal's blue line after the latest injury update.

That matters because Reinbacher was one of the more interesting Black Ace names around the Canadiens once Laval's season ended.

Now the picture looks a lot less immediate.

The update says Reinbacher is still recovering from an injury, and that the issue is visibly frustrating him at practice.

That changes the feel around his recall.

Montreal brought Reinbacher up after the Rocket were eliminated, alongside Adam Engstrom, Florian Xhekaj, and Owen Beck, mainly to give those young players a taste of NHL playoff life and to have extra bodies around if needed.

But the file makes it pretty clear Reinbacher is not close enough to full health to be viewed as a likely option for the main lineup in the Eastern Conference Final.

That is a real shame for the Canadiens, because a right-shot defenseman with Reinbacher's frame and upside would always get attention at this time of year.

He was already dealing with this before the recall. The file says he got hurt during an AHL playoff game with Laval and then missed the Rocket's final game because of that injury.

«David Reinbacher is recovering from an injury that is clearly frustrating him.»

A troubling injury update on a Canadiens defenseman is suddenly causing concern

That is the cleanest way to read this now.

The Canadiens still get value from having Reinbacher around the group, in the meetings, around the room, and near the pace of NHL playoff hockey. But that is different from getting a real lineup option.

And that difference matters more because the article points out Arber Xhekaj seems to have lost St-Louis' trust recently, which could have opened a lane for another defender if Reinbacher were fully ready.

Instead, Montreal looks set to keep Reinbacher in developmental mode while he works through the injury.

That does not hurt his long-term outlook. The file still frames him as a player with the physical tools and talent to become a regular NHL defenseman, which is exactly what Canadiens fans want to hear.

But it does slow the short-term dream of seeing him step into meaningful playoff action this spring.

That is the hard part with prospects and injuries. Sometimes the timing stings more than the injury itself.

For Reinbacher, this spring was shaping up as a chance to stay around the big club and maybe push the door open. Now it looks more like a learning trip than a playing one.
