Kaiden Guhle gave Martin St. Louis a late scare Friday, with the Canadiens facing the chance of losing a top defenseman just hours before Game 5.

The report landed less than two hours before puck drop in Raleigh, and it changed the mood around Montreal right away.

According to TVA Sports, Guhle could miss the game because of an injury. That's the kind of late playoff twist that can rattle a bench fast.

Montreal was already dealing with enough lineup stress going into the night. A possible loss on the blue line only adds more pressure to a team that has no room to drift.

The timing makes it worse. There was still no final answer when the report surfaced, which left the Canadiens waiting on warmups for clarity.

That's a bad spot for any coach, especially in a survival game. St. Louis could be forced into a last-minute shuffle if Guhle can't go.

Montreal may need a quick blue-line adjustment

Guhle has become one of the pieces Montreal leans on most on defense. He skates well, holds his spots, and gives the group a steady presence when the pace rises.

If he's out, the impact goes beyond one missing player. Pairings change, matchups get tougher, and the rest of the defense has to absorb minutes in a game that won't wait for anyone.

The quote that set this off said it all:

"Kaiden Guhle pourrait manquer le match ce soir en raison d'une blessure... à surveiller lors de la période d'échauffement"

That line left the door open, but it also made one thing clear: this was serious enough to watch closely right up to pregame.

The Canadiens were already expected to play without Brendan Gallagher and Patrik Laine, which makes the Guhle situation hit even harder.

When a team is this deep into the playoffs, one more absence can tilt everything. Structure gets tested. Depth gets exposed.

Nerves show up in a hurry.

Carolina, meanwhile, was not dealing with the same kind of uncertainty heading into the night. That only sharpened the spotlight on Montreal's situation.

For St. Louis, the waiting may have been the hardest part. Game 5 was already loaded with stakes. Then Kaiden Guhle turned warmup into the biggest storyline of the evening.
