Sean Avery's Los Angeles home became the center of a police investigation Tuesday after a frightening escalation outside the property.

The former NHL winger and his wife, Hilary Rhoda, were not inside the Hollywood Hills residence when the incident unfolded.

A contractor was on site when gunfire was reported outside the home.

According to the report, police were first called to the address around 10 a.m. after criminal threats were reported.

The suspect was identified as a neighbour allegedly involved in an ongoing dispute tied to contractors working at the house.

Officers responded, but no immediate evidence of threats was found during that first visit. No official report was taken at that stage.

By late afternoon, the situation had turned. Police were called back shortly before 5 p.m. after another report came in about possible shots fired near the property.

At least one tire on a contractor's vehicle was reportedly hit.

No injuries have been reported, but the scene was serious enough to trigger another major police response.

Avery claims neighbour tried to frame him

Avery added another layer to the story with comments posted to Instagram.

He claimed his neighbour «shot out the tires» and said there was a standoff as the man remained inside.

He also said, «He's got guns,» describing the situation while speaking from a movie set. Avery then made another allegation, saying the neighbour «tries to frame me.»

That claim came with a bizarre detail. Avery said two women were sent to the house as part of what he called a smokescreen, even though he said he was not there.

Police have confirmed they responded to the area, and the investigation remains active. The full sequence of events is still being sorted out.

A neighbour is now in custody, according to the report, but key details around what sparked the escalation have not yet been clarified.

For Avery, it's a shocking story far removed from his 580-game NHL career.

For now, the focus stays on the LAPD probe and what exactly happened outside that home.
