John Tortorella says his run with the Vegas Golden Knights is ending soon, and the veteran coach dropped that news in the middle of the Stanley Cup Final.

That's what made the timing hit even harder.

Tortorella opened up in an interview with Sportsnet and did not sound like a coach talking about a long stay behind the Vegas bench.

That's a surprise on its own, because the Golden Knights are still playing for the biggest prize in the sport.

Vegas made a stunning move in March when they fired Bruce Cassidy and turned to Tortorella to take over behind the bench.

At the time, the move looked risky.

Right now, it looks like one that gave the Golden Knights a real shot at a second Stanley Cup.

The twist is that this may have been built as a short-term arrangement from the start.

Tortorella leaves the door open for Vegas departure

That quote says plenty. Even with the season still alive, he made it clear that his future is far from settled.

Everybody knows that I came on here and, end of June, I'm done, as far as with Vegas. And Kelly, and I made that agreement when we 1st talked

So this may not be about a sudden change of heart. It may simply be the original plan now coming into focus at the most intense point of the season.

That's what makes this such a strange situation around a team still chasing the Cup.

Win or lose, the Golden Knights could be looking for a new head coach again once this playoff run ends.

Tortorella also admitted he wants to wait until the postseason is over before making any final decision on what comes next.

At this stage of his career, retirement can't be ruled out either.

For now, Vegas is still playing. But Tortorella has already made one thing clear: this story may not carry into next season.
