Dylan Larkin hasn't budged on his trade request, leaving Todd McLellan and the Red Wings with a captain who still wants out.
The latest update says Detroit's front-office shake-up involving Steve Yzerman hasn't changed Larkin's position. Whatever hope existed that organizational change might repair the relationship hasn't produced a reversal.
There is also less noise around potential destinations. Florida and Vegas are reportedly no longer viewed as realistic possibilities, narrowing a market that was already difficult for Detroit to navigate.
That changes the immediate storyline. Instead of waiting for another contender to suddenly appear, the Red Wings have to decide how long they're comfortable carrying an unresolved trade request toward camp.
A fresh management voice could still make one more pitch. Larkin may want out, but Detroit can present a different plan and see whether a new direction changes his view of the franchise.
The problem is that Larkin has reportedly remained firm so far. Every week without movement makes this look less like frustration that can fade and more like a position Detroit must eventually address.

The disappearance of Florida and Vegas as likely destinations also reduces obvious leverage. Detroit needs another club willing to meet its price, not simply one willing to take Larkin.
That could push the situation deeper into the season. Team needs change quickly once injuries arrive and contenders get a clearer look at weaknesses in their top six.
Detroit's next major decision-maker may ultimately determine whether the relationship is still salvageable. A convincing plan could matter more than another round of trade calls.
If Larkin still says no, the direction becomes much clearer. The Red Wings can wait for the right offer, but they can't pretend the request disappeared because the summer calendar moved forward.
