Connor Hellebuyck and Scott Arniel are heading toward camp with Winnipeg's biggest unresolved question still sitting in the crease.
Elliotte Friedman says the Hellebuyck situation is quiet right now, but he still believes the Jets goaltender will eventually be traded.
The timing is the new development. Friedman believes talks could begin moving again closer to training camp, when NHL clubs get a clearer read on their rosters and remaining needs.
That makes the current silence less reassuring for Winnipeg. A lack of active trade chatter in August doesn't necessarily mean Hellebuyck's future with the Jets has been settled.
Winnipeg would reportedly still prefer to keep its star goaltender and find a way to convince him that remaining with the organization is the right path.
Hellebuyck's position, meanwhile, reportedly hasn't changed. He still wants a move, leaving the Jets caught between protecting an elite player and accepting that the relationship may have run its course.

Camp has a way of creating those openings. Injuries, disappointing performances or a contender losing confidence in its current tandem can completely alter the market within days.
That gives Winnipeg a reason to remain patient rather than accepting a package simply because Hellebuyck has asked to leave.
The other side is the locker-room pressure. If no trade happens before camp, Arniel could have his starting goaltender answering questions about an exit while the rest of the Jets are trying to prepare for the season.
Friedman isn't reporting that a transaction is close. His read is that Hellebuyck eventually moves and that the next serious wave of activity may arrive as teams return to the ice.
That distinction matters because Winnipeg still controls the pace. There is no reason to treat the next few weeks like an artificial deadline if the offers don't match Hellebuyck's value.
But the closer camp gets, the harder the story becomes to contain. Every team searching for stability in the crease will know one of the NHL's biggest names may still be available.
