Dakota Joshua could be running out of room in Toronto as head coach Jim Hiller prepares to reshape the Maple Leafs' bottom six.
Toronto has already moved several pieces following a disappointing season, and Joshua now stands out as another forward whose roster spot isn't guaranteed.
The Maple Leafs added Nick Paul, Brandon Duhaime, Jack Roslovic, Colton Sissons, Teddy Blueger and Zack MacEwen this offseason. That suddenly creates serious competition for minutes.
Joshua finished last season with 10 goals and 18 points across 55 games. For a player occupying a bottom-six role, the offensive output didn't separate him enough from Toronto's other options.
His physical game still carries value. Joshua recorded 195 hits, giving Toronto a heavy presence that can change the tone along the boards and on the forecheck.
But Toronto's offseason additions have created overlap. Several forwards can handle checking assignments while giving Hiller different lineup combinations heading into training camp.
Dakota Joshua could become Toronto's next trade chip
The financial angle matters too. Moving Joshua's $3,250,000 cap hit would create more flexibility for Toronto to address another area of the roster before puck drop.
That makes Joshua an obvious name to watch if the Maple Leafs decide another move is needed. His size and physical style could still attract clubs looking for more edge in their bottom six.
Toronto probably wouldn't be moving him for a massive return. A mid-round pick could enter the conversation, while Joshua could also become part of a larger package for an upgrade elsewhere.
There's also some upside for a team willing to bet on a rebound. Joshua scored 18 goals and 32 points in 63 games with Vancouver during the 2023-24 season.
That production hasn't followed him consistently since, which is why his situation in Toronto has become so interesting.
Joshua remains useful, popular and difficult to play against. But roster decisions aren't made on popularity alone, especially when cap space and lineup spots are tightening.
The Maple Leafs have already shown they're willing to make aggressive changes. Joshua could be the next familiar name moved before the new season begins.
