Nick Kypreos thinks the Vancouver Canucks can move Elias Pettersson if they eat some salary, and a winless camp heading into the weekend isn't helping.
His math is simple. Retain enough to bring the forward's cap hit down to $9,000,000, and a trade that helps the rebuild might finally be out there.
Right now, the number sits at $11,600,000. Getting it to Kypreos' figure means Vancouver keeps $2,600,000 on its own books.
Is that a price worth paying? For a team coming off the worst record in the NHL in 2025-26, it might be the cheapest way forward.
Kypreos' framing matters too. He didn't pitch a deal to contend now, he pitched one that puts them "in a better place to rebuild."
He's right, and the Canucks shouldn't flinch at the retained money. Dead cap stings less than a star contract sitting on a roster that isn't built to win.

Pettersson logged 20:48 in that one without putting a shot on goal. He went even and took a minor penalty.
Linus Karlsson scored the lone Vancouver goal on the power play. Zeev Buium set it up while logging 25:05.
Retaining salary is like knocking the price down on a house that's sat on the market too long. You take the hit so somebody finally makes an offer.
The Canucks have already watched one star walk. Quinn Hughes finished last season in Minnesota, and Rick Dhaliwal reported he was tired of the chaos.
Thatcher Demko's $8,500,000 cap hit is the other big number on the books. Move Pettersson, and the cap sheet finally starts to look like a rebuild.
Retention also widens the market. At a lower number, more contenders can at least pick up the phone without gutting their own roster.
Malhotra's group hosts Seattle on Saturday. The regular season opens September 29 in Edmonton.
The harder question is what comes back. Eating money only makes sense if the return actually moves the rebuild forward, and Vancouver can't afford to botch that part.
