The Anaheim Ducks placed Laurent Brossoit on waivers for the purpose of assigning him to San Diego, part of a cut that trimmed camp to 27 players.
Defenseman Travis Mitchell also hit the wire. Nico Myatovic, Stian Solberg and Noah Warren were assigned straight to the AHL.
What's left is 16 forwards, eight defensemen and three goaltenders.
The veteran's preseason didn't help his case. He stopped four of eight shots over 29:47 in a 10-0 loss in San Jose.
Ville Husso took the loss that night after allowing six goals on 19 shots.
So who's carrying the crease? Lukas Dostal played the full 60 in Saturday's 6-2 loss in Los Angeles, stopping 14 of 20.
Stian Solberg heads to San Diego as Joel Quenneville trims to 27
Solberg's assignment is the prospect story. The defenseman logged 18:03 in that Saturday loss and 18:51 in San Jose.
Mitchell got plenty of work too, playing 19:09 against the Kings and finishing plus-1.
Myatovic skated 14:25 in Los Angeles.
The Ducks made the right call in goal. One ugly half in San Jose is the kind of thing a veteran can't talk his way past in September.
A blowout like that is a grease fire in the kitchen. Nobody cares who turned on the stove, but everybody smells smoke for a week.
Joel Quenneville's group went 1-3 this preseason. The Ducks open Friday in Vegas, then host Florida on Sunday.
The money in Anaheim sits up front. Leo Carlsson carries an $18,000,000 cap hit, and Cutter Gauthier sits at $13,500,000.
Jackson Lacombe's $9,000,000 deal anchors the back end, which makes Solberg's development in San Diego matter even more.
The roster has to shrink again before Monday's 5 p.m. ET deadline, so Pat Verbeek isn't done.
If Brossoit clears, he becomes San Diego's insurance policy. If somebody claims him, Verbeek will find out fast whether three goalies was one too many or one too few.
