Evgeny Kuznetsov is out of a job this morning after Novosibirsk Sibir agreed to tear up his contract just 8 games into the season.
The split is mutual on paper. According to his agent, the release came at Kuznetsov's own request, citing family circumstances.
That changes the tone of this one. Nobody pushed him out the door, but the result is the same, a player who had a contract yesterday no longer has one today.
No further detail has been given on the family front. And nobody outside that household gets to fill in the blanks.
But the hockey side of this story is harder to ignore. He has now played for four different KHL teams since returning to Russia in 2024.
Four teams. That kind of turnover usually tells you something, and it rarely tells you something flattering.
Some of those moves may have perfectly reasonable explanations. Taken together, they paint the picture of a career that hasn't found solid ice since the move home.
Kuznetsov's next landing spot is now a real question mark
Eight games is barely a sample. Sibir hardly got an opening stretch out of the deal before both sides decided to walk away.
The club, for its part, gets roster flexibility back early in the year. That's about the only consolation in a partnership that never got going.
So where does a player with that kind of recent history go from here? The rumor mill will churn, but teams have now watched the same movie four times.
It's a bit like a tenant with four leases in a short span. The rent might always get paid, but every new landlord reads the file a little more closely.
Here's the blunt part. Any club that rushes to sign him before the family situation settles is making a bad bet, for itself and for him.
The timing stings too. A release this early leaves him on the outside while every roster around the league is still finding its rhythm.
Nothing in the announcement points to a next destination, a return date, or even a timeline for one. That silence leaves plenty of room for noise.
For now, the 92 on the back of that Sibir sweater goes into a drawer in Novosibirsk.
Whether Kuznetsov pulls on another one this season is a question only he can answer. And he hasn't answered it yet.
