Marco Kasper gave Todd McLellan an early jolt Friday night, dropping the gloves with Sean Durzi during Detroit's home game against New York.

The Detroit Red Wings center went straight at Durzi in the second period, turning an Original Six matchup into something much heavier than a routine October game.

Kasper and Durzi squared up near the boards before trading a series of punches, with neither player looking interested in backing away once the gloves came off.

For Kasper, the sequence carried extra weight because Detroit entered the night without Dylan Larkin, leaving McLellan with a different look down the middle against the Rangers.

Kasper was skating between Michael Rasmussen and Keegan Kolesar, a line built with enough size to make life uncomfortable below the circles and around the crease.

And this wasn't a staged scrap off a faceoff. Kasper and Durzi came together during the flow of play, separated, then immediately decided they were going.

The clip shows Kasper grabbing Durzi high on the jersey as both players throw repeatedly before the officials finally move in.

Marco Kasper sends an early message

That matters for Detroit because Kasper isn't being used simply as an energy piece. McLellan has him in the middle of a third line expected to handle real shifts and push play the other way.

Durzi, meanwhile, entered the night on New York's second defense pair alongside Marcus Pettersson. Mike Sullivan had the Rangers playing the second half of a back-to-back after Thursday's win over Tampa Bay.

So the confrontation involved two players carrying legitimate lineup responsibility, not two skaters buried at the bottom of the bench looking for one isolated moment.

Kasper's willingness to engage also gave Detroit's bench an emotional lift in a game already carrying opening-night pressure at Little Caesars Arena.

The bigger question now is what McLellan does with Kasper's deployment after a night in which the young center made his presence impossible to miss.

Detroit needs centers to absorb heavier responsibility while Larkin is out, and Kasper just added another layer to the way he can affect a game.
