S.J. Sharkie gave Ryan Warsofsky's Sharks an off-ice moment nobody expected Saturday night, sending a young fan running back to her family.

The San Jose mascot was greeting the child when a playful bit went sideways in a hurry. What started as a warm interaction quickly became a moment the family probably won't forget.

The young fan approached Sharkie without hesitation and gave the oversized mascot a hug. Everything looked comfortable until Sharkie leaned toward her head and pretended to take a bite. HockeyFeed

She wanted no part of the joke.

The child immediately turned and sprinted back toward her family, clearly startled by Sharkie's sudden move. It was the kind of reaction no mascot can predict when working a crowd full of young fans. HockeyFeed

Sharkie wasn't trying to scare anyone, but the gap between a harmless mascot gag and a terrifying moment for a child can be pretty small.

Sharkie quickly changes course after the scare

The best part came after the initial panic. Sharkie backed off, gave the young fan some room and eventually joined the family for a group photo.

That ending changed the tone of the entire sequence. Instead of the interaction finishing with the child racing away, the family managed to salvage a much calmer final memory.

Sharkie also appeared to understand the message. During the photo, the mascot kept noticeably more distance from the young fan than during the first encounter. HockeyFeed

Mascots are built around oversized reactions, physical comedy and exaggerated gestures. For most young fans, that's exactly what makes an arena visit memorable.

But every once in a while, a routine bit gets a reaction nobody saw coming. This one certainly did.

The clip quickly drew major attention online, giving the Sharks an unexpected viral moment before any puck was dropped.

For Sharkie, there was at least a happy ending: the child returned for the picture, the family stayed involved, and one ill-timed joke turned into a story Sharks fans won't forget anytime soon.
