Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen is two games into the Sabres season, and fans are already shipping him down the QEW to Toronto.
A fan-built trade pitch made the rounds Sunday, and it struck a nerve in Buffalo.
The idea sends Luukkonen and Ryan McLeod to the Maple Leafs for Anthony Stolarz, Miles Wood, Benoit-Olivier Groulx and a 2027 first-round pick.
It's a fan proposal and nothing more. But the reason it caught fire is sitting right there in the numbers.
The Finnish netminder owns a .784 save percentage through his first two appearances. That's an ugly look for a goalie carrying a $4,750,000 cap hit.
Buffalo is 1-1-0 and has a -2 goal differential. The 6-3 loss in Columbus on October 1 set the tone before anyone had found their seat.
The 4-3 home win over Chicago on Saturday steadied things. Chicago is 0-3-0, though, so nobody in Buffalo should be throwing a parade.
Toronto's goalie math makes Anthony Stolarz the wrong piece to move
In Toronto, Stolarz has a .963 save percentage and a win from his two appearances.
Sergei Bobrovsky, the other half of that tandem, has lost both of his appearances at an .887 clip. And he's 38.
So the Leafs would ship out the hot goalie to take a swing on the cold one. Read that sentence twice.
Jim Hiller's group is 1-2-0, all on home ice, after dropping a 3-2 decision to Ottawa on Saturday. Six goals in three games gives a goalie zero cushion.
Wood is the strangest piece of the package. He's skating for the AHL's Toronto Marlies on a $2,500,000 cap hit that runs through 2028-29.
His last NHL season produced 14 points in 54 games with the Columbus Blue Jackets. That reads like a bottom-six contract getting moved off the books.
Groulx, at $812,500, has dressed twice for the Leafs without a point. McLeod has one assist for Buffalo but went minus-3 through two games.
For Buffalo, this is a bad deal. Dumping a 27-year-old starter two games in is like selling your car because the check-engine light blinked once on the drive home.
Stolarz is 32. The first-round pick has real value, sure, but Buffalo would be swapping a goalie's prime years for his late chapter.
Jarmo Kekalainen has been running the front office since December 2025, and a two-game sample shouldn't move his needle.
Lindy Ruff's crease decisions matter more right now. Colten Ellis has appeared once without a decision, and Minnesota rolls into town Tuesday night at 2-0-0.
Then the two teams meet October 15 in Toronto, their first matchup of the season. If Luukkonen is still leaking goals by then, this fake trade starts sounding a lot less fake.

Should the Sabres move Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen if he's still struggling by the October 15 game in Toronto?
