Connor McDavid and Mike Babcock suddenly have another roster storyline hanging over the Edmonton Oilers, and this one could turn into a real move.

A new trade report has linked Edmonton to an unnamed young forward from the Eastern Conference, with the Oilers described as a front-runner in the discussions.

The profile is what makes this interesting. The target is believed to be young, capable of playing center, loaded with upside and still trying to establish his full value at the NHL level.

And this isn't being framed as a phone call that happened yesterday. Darren Dreger indicated the Oilers have been discussing the player with the other team for a number of weeks.

That changes the temperature around the story. Edmonton isn't simply checking prices around the league. There appears to be a specific player management has kept on its radar.

Darren Dreger on The Nielson Show about the rumor of a possible trade for the Oilers: meme chose : "I'm not gonna mention the player's name. [...] A young forward, a young center potentially, with plenty of upside, plenty of room to grow, and plenty to prove at the NHL level. I know it's a conversation the Oilers have had for a number of weeks with a team in the Eastern Conference. [...] We're talking about a guy who's still trying to prove his NHL value at this point. [...] I just know that Edmonton was considered to be a front-runner in trade conversation with this team about this Eastern Conference player." #LetsGoOilers #NHL

Stan Bowman also has a roster that has opened 2-0-1 while scoring 17 goals, giving him the luxury of dealing from a position of early strength rather than panic. Marqueur.com

Edmonton may be chasing more than depth

The bigger question is where this mystery player would fit. A center with legitimate offensive upside could give Babcock another option behind Edmonton's established stars and create far more flexibility inside the top nine.

That matters because young centers with NHL upside don't usually become available without a reason. If another Eastern Conference team is listening, Edmonton clearly sees enough value to stay involved.

The Oilers also aren't operating like a club looking for a temporary patch. Their interest reportedly stretches back weeks, suggesting Bowman has identified a player who could help beyond a short stretch of the schedule.

There is still one massive unknown: the name. Dreger specifically kept the player's identity out of the report, which leaves the potential acquisition cost and exact roster fit impossible to pin down.

But Edmonton being characterized as a front-runner is the part that should get attention. That language moves this beyond random trade-board speculation and into something worth watching.

McDavid already carries a $12,500,000 cap hit, while Leon Draisaitl sits at $14,000,000, so any move for another meaningful piece has to fit a roster built around major commitments. Marqueur.com

For now, the target remains hidden. The Oilers' interest does not. And after weeks of conversations, this could be the first sign that Edmonton is preparing to add another young piece before the season settles in.
