Aydar Suniev is headed back to Calgary as Ryan Huska gets fresh options for a Flames lineup stuck in a deep scoring skid.

The Calgary Flames recalled Suniev and Jonathan Castagna from the AHL's Calgary Wranglers on Wednesday, injecting two forwards into a group badly needing a different look.

The timing stands out. Calgary has been fighting through a losing stretch while its offensive output has dried up, putting more pressure on every lineup decision Huska makes.

Suniev gives the coaching staff another potential option on the wing. He can bring pace, size and a direct attacking element to a lineup that hasn't generated enough finish.

Castagna's arrival adds another body for the bottom six and gives Calgary flexibility before its next game. At minimum, the Flames now have choices if Huska wants to change the mix.

That matters when a team is struggling to score. Keeping the same combinations together becomes harder to justify when the results and the chances aren't turning.

Calgary opens the door to lineup changes

The recalls don't guarantee either forward will immediately dress, but they put pressure on the current group. A player who has been quiet can now be replaced without Calgary scrambling for another move.

Huska can also use the extra forwards to adjust practice lines, change the fourth line or give a struggling regular a night upstairs as a healthy scratch.

For Suniev, the opportunity could be especially interesting if Calgary wants more attacking intent. During a scoring drought, one strong shift can quickly earn another.

Castagna offers a different option. His presence gives the Flames another way to reshape the bottom six without forcing a major change higher in the lineup.

General manager Craig Conroy has now given Huska two fresh pieces while the Flames search for traction. The next decision belongs behind the bench.

Calgary's losing stretch has made patience expensive. Every game without enough offence increases the chance that another regular loses minutes, a line gets broken up or one of the recalls gets a real opportunity.

The move itself is simple. The consequence could be bigger if Suniev or Castagna pushes his way into the lineup and forces Huska to change a group that hasn't delivered enough.
