Chase Stillman and Todd McLellan are facing a roster decision in Detroit after the young forward cleared NHL waivers Thursday.

The NHL waiver wire delivered another significant development on October 8, with three forwards officially going unclaimed. Elliotte Friedman confirmed that Chase Stillman, Stefan Noesen, and Brett Leason all cleared.

The announcement means the Detroit Red Wings, New Jersey Devils, and San Jose Sharks retain control of their players without losing them to another organization through the waiver process.

Noesen stands out among the three names. The Devils winger has established himself as an NHL contributor, making his presence on waivers considerably more surprising than a routine minor-league roster adjustment.

For Sheldon Keefe and the Devils, the situation raises immediate questions about Noesen's place in the forward rotation. His experience and ability to contribute around the crease give New Jersey another option if changes become necessary.

Clearing waivers doesn't automatically mean a player has been assigned to the American Hockey League. It gives his organization greater flexibility to make that move, subject to league roster rules.

Detroit's situation is different. Stillman is competing for an opportunity in an organization that already has several forwards fighting for regular NHL minutes.

McLellan and the Red Wings can now evaluate their next move without another club having claimed Stillman. A minor-league assignment would give him a chance to continue developing through consistent playing time.

In San Jose, Leason finds himself facing another difficult roster situation. The Sharks have younger forwards pushing for opportunities, making competition for bottom-six roles particularly demanding.

Ryan Warsofsky must balance that development with the need for experienced depth. Leason's size and NHL experience remain useful, but clearing waivers provides no guarantee of a regular lineup spot.

The most intriguing part of Thursday's announcement remains Noesen. An established forward going unclaimed creates questions about how rival organizations value experienced depth players.

For all three organizations, the immediate concern shifts from potentially losing an asset to determining where that player fits next.

And for Stillman, Noesen, and Leason, clearing waivers brings relief on one front while leaving their NHL futures unsettled.
