Igor Shesterkin's season-ending injury has left Mike Sullivan facing a major decision, but the New York Rangers aren't rushing into a trade as they trust Dylan Garand between the pipes.

Despite losing their starting goaltender for the remainder of the 2026-27 season, the Rangers reportedly intend to remain patient rather than immediately search for an outside replacement.

According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, New York wants to evaluate its internal options before sacrificing valuable assets to acquire another established goaltender.

"Elliotte Friedman: Re Rangers goalie situation/Shesterkin injury: I do believe the Rangers will try to be patient with this...and not make any kind of quick panic move; [Dylan Garand] gets a huge opportunity - Saturday Headlines (10/10)"

That decision puts young netminder Dylan Garand directly in the spotlight, with the organization prepared to give him an opportunity to handle a much larger workload.

Shesterkin suffered a right knee injury during New York's 3-1 loss against the Washington Capitals on October 9, leaving an enormous hole in the crease.

The situation becomes even more complicated with backup Joonas Korpisalo expected to remain unavailable for another four weeks, reducing Sullivan's options considerably.

Rather than entering the trade market immediately, general manager Chris Drury appears willing to see whether Garand can provide stability during this difficult stretch.

Dylan Garand has time to earn a full time NHL role in New York

The 24-year-old already delivered an encouraging performance on October 2, stopping 22 shots against the Detroit Red Wings to record his first NHL shutout.

Garand also stepped into action following Shesterkin's injury against Washington, making 11 saves and gaining another valuable opportunity to establish himself.

His previous NHL experience offers encouragement. Last season, Garand posted a 2-0-1 record with a .948 save percentage across three starts.

Still, carrying the responsibility of replacing Shesterkin represents a completely different challenge, particularly with the pressure surrounding the Rangers early in the season.

Waiting also allows Drury to protect draft picks and prospects instead of paying an inflated price for a goaltender when potential trade partners have little incentive to move one.

The Rangers haven't ruled out exploring the market later, but their immediate direction gives Garand the crease and an opportunity to influence the organization's next move.
