Islanders forward Matias Maccelli needed help getting off the ice tonight in Toronto after falling awkwardly following a trip from Darren Raddysh.

Gino Hard shared the sequence, which left Maccelli unable to leave under his own power.

The frame shows him tangled up along the end boards behind the Toronto net as Leafs defenders close in around him.

Dr. Harjas Grewal said the mechanism can cause a left high ankle sprain, an MCL injury or both, which usually means four to six weeks out.

He added that a right groin strain is also possible, with the timeline depending on the grade.

Those are possibilities based on the replay, not a confirmed diagnosis.

It's like slipping on one patch of ice on an otherwise clear sidewalk. Nothing about the step looked dangerous, but the landing changed everything.

Matias Maccelli injury: Dr. Harjas Grewal flags ankle and knee concerns

Raddysh's trip started it, but nobody wanted it to end like this, and it shouldn't be treated as anything more than a hockey play gone wrong.

Maccelli has 6 points on a $2,250,000 cap hit.

He's also chipped in 2 power-play assists.

The Islanders are already without Alexander Romanov, who is out until at least April 8 with a knee injury.

Bo Horvat leads the team with 7 points, and Matthew Schaefer has 6 assists.

New York came in at 3-3-1, still looking for its first road win.

The Islanders had allowed just 17 goals in seven games, with Ilya Sorokin at .934.

Raddysh has 4 assists on an $8,500,000 cap hit.

Toronto is also without John Tavares, now listed out until at least Oct 31, and the Leafs had dropped two straight coming into tonight.

If it is the ankle or the knee, how does Peter DeBoer replace that production for a month or more?

The Islanders host Anaheim on Tuesday and Los Angeles on Thursday.

Four to six weeks is the worst-case window floated so far. The Islanders will be hoping the real answer is a lot shorter.
