Nikita Zadorov's situation in Boston has taken another turn after head coach Marco Sturm scratched him, sparking unexpected speculation involving the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Bruins defenseman was left out of Saturday's lineup against the Los Angeles Kings following a penalty-filled performance against the Anaheim Ducks.

Zadorov received a double minor for roughing after repeated confrontations with Frank Vatrano. Sturm responded by making him a healthy scratch for disciplinary reasons.

Boston went on to defeat Los Angeles 4-1, with Jonathan Aspirot stepping into the lineup. The decision immediately raised questions about Zadorov's standing with the Bruins.

But the bigger story developed away from the ice when Zadorov's agent, Dan Milstein, responded to a fan on social media.

The fan suggested Toronto wouldn't treat Zadorov the same way. Milstein answered with four words: "No he would not." That response quickly fueled speculation about a potential move.

Nikita Zadorov to Toronto: The perfect fit?

The Toronto connection isn't entirely new. When Zadorov was seeking a trade from the Calgary Flames in 2023, his name was already connected to the Maple Leafs.

Toronto also has a legitimate reason to explore defensive upgrades. Chris Tanev's upper-body injury has increased the pressure on the blue line under head coach Jim Hiller.

Zadorov would bring size, physicality and an intimidating presence, but his discipline remains a concern. The defenseman has already accumulated 29 penalty minutes through eight games.

His contract presents another obstacle. Zadorov carries a $5 million annual cap hit through the 2029-30 season, making any potential trade financially complicated.

There's also the divisional rivalry to consider. Boston would have little reason to strengthen Toronto without receiving a significant return.

Most importantly, Milstein hasn't publicly requested a trade, and no negotiations between the Bruins and Maple Leafs have been confirmed.

Still, Sturm's disciplinary decision and Milstein's pointed response have put Zadorov's future under a brighter spotlight. His next appearance in Boston's lineup could help determine whether this controversy fades or continues.
